Gypsy leaders in Romania have praised pop superstar MADONNA for speaking out about their plight, insisting her support “means a lot” to the Roma community.

The Material Girl was booed during a performance in Bucharest last week (26Aug09) when she urged the 60,000-strong crowd to fight “discrimination” against gypsies throughout eastern Europe.

Her comments have already been applauded by some religious leaders and now the gypsies themselves are speaking out.

Florin Cioaba, who is known as the unofficial King of the Gypsies, says, “Madonna is the only international personality to have raised the problem of discrimination against the Roma in Europe.

“Madonna is a fighter for Roma rights in Europe. What Madonna did means a lot to us, it amounts to everything that Roma organisations have done all over Europe.”

Cioaba admits he is considering honouring the singer with a gypsy award for her campaigning efforts.
