Chandigarh, Dec 30 (IANS) While a lot of young people are planning New Year parties at night clubs, discotheques and hill stations, a group of students from Chandigarh’s Panjab University will be doing something unique — reaching out to the community around Chandigarh to help them usher in the New Year.
Students of the University’s School of Communication Studies Friday launched a 72-hour-long radio show Friday on its community radio station, Jyotirgamya (91.2 FM), with a variety of programmes.
The idea is the brainchild of Jyotirgamya manager Sunil Sharma.
‘Since the New Year is approaching, we wanted to do something for the community. The show has been designed keeping in mind the problems of the common man. A character has been generated by the name of Jaspreet. All the problems related to the society and social evils have been woven in a story that will be on air for three days (Dec 30, 31 and Jan 1),’ Sharma said.
‘The problems will be portrayed as Jaspreet’s. For the solution, experts will be coming in for live interviews,’ RJ Shweta Sharma, one of the three radio jockeys to compere the programme, pointed out.
A psychologist, dietician, motivational speaker, an Art of Living teacher, an army officer and many more experts have been invited for live interviews.
Students of the university’s Department of Economics and Department of Music will also be playing live music for three days.
‘We do not have any copyright issues and so we are going to play live music as well with the help of these students,’ said Sunil Sharma.
Talking to IANS, Gurdayal Singh Namdhari, an M. Phil student of the Department of Music said: ‘Music is our life. We are getting such a good chance to celebrate the new year this way. What else could we have asked for?’
Said one of the producers: ‘It’s a unique way to celebrate the New Year and serve our community simultaneously. We feel great being a part of this programme.’
