Mumbai, Nov 1 (IANS) An India-born American woman was Thursday sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment for killing two people with her car.

Special Judge I.M. Bohri pronounced Nooriya Haveliwala guilty and fined her Rs.5 lakh too.
Haveliwala was arrested in January 2010 after she drove her car into six people on the Marine Drive in south Mumbai. Two of them, including a police sub-inspector, were killed.
Haveliwala, then 27, had rammed her car into a police jeep, a taxi and a motorcycle while on her way home to Colaba in south Mumbai.
She was arrested after medical reports suggested she was under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The court said Rs.2 lakh each from the fine amount will be given as compensation to the families of sub-inspector Dinanath Shinde and biker Afzal Ibrahim who died.
The rest will be divided among four others who were injured.
Haveliwala had pleaded for mercy and a lighter sentence, citing that she needed to take care of her 80-year-old mother. She had also told the court that she was ready to help the victims by compensating them.
