Bhopal, May 30 (IANS) Another lion has died in the Van Vihar National Park here — second in five days, an official said Monday, taking the toll of animals dying in the park this year to eight.
The 21-year-old Akbar, a male lion, died from multi-organ failure, according to the official.
‘He was too old and was brought from Rajmahal Circus in 2006,’ A.K. Khare, park assistant director, told IANS.
Another lion Inder had died in Van Vihar May 25.
‘The average age of lions is 15-16 years in the wild. One of them living over 20 is a credit to us,’ said Khare.
He added: ‘Eighty percent of the animals in Van Vihar are aged and there are at least four who are sick. They may die in the near future.’
Akbar’s was the eight death of an animal in Van Vihar since January, he said. One panther and a python were among those that died there this year.
