Lucknow, Feb 28 (IANS) The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court Tuesday asked the union government to expedite its decision on the issue of anticipatory bails in Uttar Pradesh.
A bench of Justice Sudhir Agarwal and Justice S.V.S. Rathore asked the union home secretary and the secretary to the president to take a prompt decision on the matter.
The bench issued the directive while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by city lawyer Ashok Pandey, who sought the court’s intervention to get anticipatory bail allowed in Uttar Pradesh, as was the case in other states.
The PIL also said that the state government has already sent a proposal to this effect, after getting it passed by the state legislature, to Governor B.L. Joshi for assent.
The governor had sent it to the president’s office where it is pending consideration.
