New Delhi, Feb 2 (IANS) Battling for survival at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here, two-year-old baby Falak continued to be critical Thursday, as police made their fourth arrest in the case.
“Falak is critical. We will put her off the ventilator for some time and see if she can do without it,” M.C. Misra, chief of the AIIMS Trauma Centre, told IANS.
“If she manages to stay normal without it, then it is certainly an improvement. The baby’s lung infection has reduced as the antibiotics have shown some effect,” Misra added.
Baby Falak is now battling chest, brain and blood infections. She is being fed through a tube.
“Our main concern is septicemia (blood infection). We are monitoring her condition minute by minute and it’s important to see how she does in the next 48 hours,” Misra added.
Meanwhile, a woman named Arti was held for forcing into prostitution the 14-year-old girl who brought Falak to hospital.
The teenager left Falak at AIIMS Jan 18 with multiple injuries, including a fractured skull, human bite marks on her tiny frame and a clot on the right side of her brain.
“Arti is an associate of Pooja (who was arrested earlier),” a police officer said.
Police Wednesday announced the arrest of three people — Sandeep, his wife Pooja and Jitendra Kumar Gupta, the teenager’s father who used to physically assault her.
The teenager, who initially claimed to be Falak’s mother, is now in a juvenile home. She got the baby from Rajkumar, the key accused in the case who is on the run.
According to police, the juvenile girl was taken to Etah district of Uttar Pradesh by her father’s acquaintance Pooja, who forced her to marry an old man. Upon refusing, the girl was repeatedly raped by Sandeep.
The couple later brought her to Delhi and forced her into sex trade in Munirka area of south Delhi.
It was here that she met the key accused in the case Rajkumar Gupta, who married her and started living in Mahipalpur area of south Delhi.
Rajkumar got Falak from a woman Laxmi, who after being questioned by police, revealed that she received the baby from Munni, the biological mother, who too is absconding.
