Kolkata, Jan 10 (IANS) Deploring the current political clashes in West Bengal, former governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi Thursday described the violence as “mindless” and “self-destructive”.
“It (political clash) destroys both the person aimed at and also the person aiming. It is mindless, because it is also self-destructive. It is something which politics must learn,” Gandhi told reporters here when asked to comment on the on-going clashes between workers of the ruling Trianamool Congress and the opposition CPI-M.
Gopalkrishna Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and C. Rajagopalchari, served as governor of the state from 2004 to 2009.
His comments came a day after Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan described the political clashes in the state as “some kind of goondaism” and referred to police “weaknesses” in view of the “law and order situation”.
Speaking on the sidelines of a programme here Wednesday, Narayanan asked police and the administration to function impartially while arresting the guilty.
“This is not a good political culture. I think this is some kind of goondaism going on here,” Narayanan said.
Trouble flared in Bhangar in South 24-Parganas district late last week after a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) office and a Trinamool Congress office were damaged and set on fire.
When CPI-M legislator Abdur Rezzak Mollah went to the area, he was attacked, allegedly by Trinamool workers.
On Tuesday, many were injured in clashes between Trinamool Congress and CPI-M workers in Bamanghata in Bhangar.
