New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS) Britain Sunday advised its citizens against travelling to the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir after flash floods devastated the popular tourist town of Leh.
‘Due to ongoing disruption following floods, we advise against travel to Leh and the surrounding area at the current time,’ said a travel advisory issued by the British foreign office.
At least 132 people were killed, 400 injured while 500 were missing and after Friday’s cloudburst that caused flash floods in Leh town. So far 111 bodies have been identified.
The advisory said that not only were communication networks damaged, but that the Leh-Manali and Leh-Srinagar roads were also closed. ‘You should not attempt to drive down them,’ it cautioned.
Further, the advisory also said that commercial flights were operating, but booking may be complicated as ticketing systems have been affected by electricity and telecom failures.
‘We understand that the airlines are currently only accepting cash,’ it added.
The advisory also asked British nationals in the affect area to ‘follow local advice’.
