New Delhi, March 8 (IANS) A campaign to raise awareness on women’s safety at public places and public transport was launched Saturday in the national capital on the occasion of the International Women’s Day.

The campaign – Board the Bus – provided a platform for discussion between the government, transport organisations and civil society on the safety of women and called upon women to retrieve their faith and access public spaces.
“The International Centre on Research for Women study showed that 95 percent of women and girls in Delhi found the city unsafe.
“Hence, the campaign tried to reach out to as many women to come together to reclaim their space with confidence,” said Sonali Khan, vice president and country head of the NGO Breakthrough.
Around 82 percent of women felt that bus is the most unsafe mode of transport in Delhi. Similarly, 88 percent of women felt that when a woman is harassed in a public place, she rarely or never gets any help from the public.
As a part of this campaign, around 350 women in the city boarded buses and shared their experiences of using public transport for travelling.
