New Delhi, Aug 30 (IANS) Most incidents of crime against senior citizens is on the rise in India.

According to information provided to the Lok Sabha Tuesday, the number of murder victims was 3,232 in 2007, 3,206 in 2008 and 3,215 in 2009. Most victims were males.

Minister of State for Home Jitendra Singh, however, said in a statement that the rape figures rose from 133 in 2007 to 136 in 2008 but fell to 95 in 2009.

Cases of culpable homicide not amounting to murder showed a steady rise: 293 in 2007, 332 in 2008 and 350 in 2009.

Similarly, cases of kidnapping and abduction went up from 192 in 2007 to 228 in 2008 and to 258 in 2009, the minister said.

While underlining that law and order was a state subject, Jitendra Singh said the central government had asked states to take several steps to provide security to senior citizens.
