New Delhi, May 5 (IANS) Delhi traffic police Saturday thanked and praised residents of Delhi for complying with the new regulation against using tinted glasses on their vehicles.
According to a message posted by Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg on the force’s Facebook page, which has over 1 lakh followers, 4,915 people were prosecuted in a drive Friday.
“THANK YOU DELHI. WE had large scale compliance with the new regulation… First time yesterday I saw an overwhelmingly large number of vehicles without black films,” said Garg in the message.
“Films of those violating rules were removed on the spot. Nobody resisted and we had virtually no impounding of vehicle… If city has 72 lakh vehicles and lakhs coming in from outside, 4,915 violations is less than 0.5 percent,” he added.
Garg praised the people of Delhi for “more or less complying with the rules and regulations” and said many of the fined vehicles were from outside Delhi.
“With more awareness, today (Saturday) we expect less violations and more compliance with rules,” he added.
Fifty teams of the traffic police were stationed in the capital to crack down on vehicles with tinted glasses following a recent Supreme Court ruling.
The court banned use of black films of any visible light transmission (VLT) percentage or any other material on the front and rear screens and windows of all vehicles throughout the country.
Meanwhile, the drive led to an all-time high prosecution of traffic violations in the capital with 13,464 people fined in a day.
“Most of days, prosecutions are between 8,000 to 10,000. April 4, 2012, was the day when city witnessed largest number of prosecutions,” Garg said.
“As many as 8,086 violations were booked against cars and for a change, violations by two-wheelers were less at 2,406,” he added.
