New Delhi, July 3 (IANS) The fire which broke out at a power sub-station near Rajghat in central Delhi Sunday has been doused, an official said. No casualty has been reported.
‘The transformer outside the power house caught fire, the cause is not known yet. Everything is under control,’ said A.K. Sharma, director, Delhi Fire Service.
‘Cooling operations are on. No casualty has been reported,’ added Sharma.
Around 27 fire tenders were involved in the 40-minute operation.
The incident took place around 11.15 a.m. near the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, where a 100 MVA transformer caught fire.
The fire created panic among tourists and bystanders near Rajghat, who were asked to evacuate the area immediately.
‘A huge explosion was heard from the power station. We rushed out and saw huge, black clouds of smoke,’ said Milkhaan Singh, a tea vendor whose stall is opposite the power station.
‘People could be seen rushing out of the power station,’ Singh said.
Meanwhile, Delhi Transco officials maintained there will be no power cut due to the fire. ‘The power supply in the connecting areas would not be affected as we have transferred the load to the sub-stations in Kashmere Gate and Indraprastha,’ said Delhi Transco spokesperson Rishi Raj.
