Hyderabad, Jan 1 (IANS) At least eight people were killed on New Year’s Day in accidents in different parts of Andhra Pradesh, police said Sunday.

Four revellers were killed and another critically injured when the motorcycle they were riding fell in a drain after hitting a road divider in Secunderabad here early Sunday.

The youngsters were returning home after participating in New Year celebrations.

As all the five were riding one bike, it lost control, hit the road divider and fell into a nearby drain, police said.

In another accident on the outskirts of Hyderabad, three people were killed and one injured when two cars collided head-on at Majeedpur in Shameerpet.

A trainee sub-inspector of police was killed when a speeding car hit him at Bandar road in Vijayawada. S. Chinni Babu was returning to police station on his bike after his duty when an unidentified car hit him.

In Hyderabad, police had made elaborate security arrangements to prevent road accidents. Tank Bund and Necklace Road on the banks of Hussain Sagar lake and all flyovers in the city were closed for traffic. Police also kept a tight vigil at hotels, restaurants and bars to prevent drunken driving.
