Kolkata, Feb 2 (IANS) A fire broke out in a cloth godown in the city Thursday evening which subsequently spread to an adjacent studio where several Bengali actors were shooting. No casualty or injury was reported.
“Ten fire tenders arrived to put out the fire and more are on the way. We are trying our best to bring the fire under control,” West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Minister Javed Khan said.
The godown located in South 24 Parganas’ Maheshtala is owned by the customs department.
Khan said a portion of the studio was illegally built. He, however, refused to comment as to why no action was taken against the studio.
Several Bengali actress including Lily Chakrabarty and Shakuntala Barua were shooting inside the premises when the fire broke out.
“I heard people shouting fire. I was too stunned to react. I was so shocked that I do not remember who pulled me out of the studio,” said Barua who along with the actors and several technicians were helped out of the building by firemen and locals.
City mayor Sovon Chatterjee, who too was present at the scene, assured that the fire would be brought under control soon.
