Ranchi, May 22 (Inditop) According to the latest census, there has been an increase in the elephant population in Jharkhand’s Dalma sanctuary, officials said Friday.
“The rise of population of elephants in Dalma sanctuary is due to arrival of calves instead of migrant elephants,” said an official of the forest department.
The latest census was conducted May 16-17.
“According to the latest census, the total number of elephants is 90, which is 10 more than the previous census,” said Krishna Prasad, assistant conservator of forest of Dalma sanctuary. Dalma sanctuary, spread over 190 sq km, is situated close to the Ranchi-Jamshedpur highway.
Of the 90 elephants, 19 are calves, 31 males and 40 females. The age of calves varies between one and nine months.
According to forest officials the highest elephant population in Dalma, 96, was registered in 2003.
The forest officials said that the elephant population varies due to many reasons. A prominent reason is migration.
In Jharkhand the total population of elephants is around 700.
