Kanpur, March 30 (IANS) An Uttar Pradesh Police officer who was shot at along with a constable inside a police station here by a drunken youth succumbed to his injuries in hospital Friday, police said.
Sub-Inspector Devendra Singh who was critically wounded in the incident at Naubasta police station, where he was the station officer, died at Regency Hospital, Amitabh Yash, deputy inspector general, Kanpur, told IANS.
He said as per departmental rules, an ex-gratia of Rs.10 lakh would be paid to his family.
Singh was shot twice in the head by a youth in the police station and rushed to the Regency Hospital, police said. The constable who was injured in the firing is serious but out of danger.
Police officials told IANS the incident took place around midnight. The youth, whom Singh had chided after his father complained that he used to create a ruckus in the house, barged into the police station and, before any one could react, whipped out a revolver and shot Singh, police said.
In a bid to escape, he also shot at the constable on duty. The accused was overpowered by other security personnel and arrested, police said. The profusely bleeding policemen were rushed to the hospital.
The incident has sent shockwaves in the police establishment as this is a rare instance when an officer was attacked inside the police station.
