New Delhi, April 2 (IANS) Against the backdrop of the unfolding democratic transition in Myanmar, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to visit the Southeast Asian country next month.
The visit is under consideration, but no final decision has been taken, well-placed sources Monday said.
If the visit takes place, Manmohan Singh will become the the first Indian prime minister to visit the gas-rich country in 25 years. Rajiv Gandhi was the last Indian prime minister to visit Myanmar in 1987.
India has taken positive note of of the Thein Sein government’s steps towards democratic reforms and national reconciliation in Myanmar. Democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi’s opposition party has claimed it has won a landslide victory in the historic by-elections, giving the reform process greater legitimacy.
