New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Wednesday deployed 1,100 workers in the Commonwealth Games Village and the Games venues to take up sanitation work, an official said.
Earlier, the MCD was only assisting three private companies which were given the job of sanitation at 11 Games venues by the CWG Organising Committee.
‘We deployed 1,100 sanitation workers with effect from today (Wednesday) at the Games Village and venues falling within MCD’s jurisdiction,’ Delhi Mayor Prithvi Raj Sawhney said.
He said the arrangement will not affect normal sanitation work in the city. ‘We are giving equal priority to the city sanitation work. It is not being neglected due to the Games,’ he added.
About 30,000 tonnes of garbage was lifted from across the capital in the last few days, he said.
Regarding the stray dog menace, the mayor informed that the MCD has rounded up 270 stray dogs during the last five days and shifted them to its veterinary centre at Ghazipur.
The Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held in Delhi Oct 3-14.
