Kolkata, Oct 31 (IANS) A court in West Bengal’s Midnapore district Monday extended, till Nov 14, the judicial custody of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sushanta Ghosh, who has been charged with murder in the Midnapore skeleton case, police said.

‘Ghosh was today (Monday) presented in court which after hearing the parties extended his custody till Nov 14,’ Deputy Inspector General (CID) K. Jayaraman told IANS.

The CID Sep 23 charged Ghosh, along with 57 others, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including murder. He has been in police custody and subsequent judicial custody since Aug 11.

Ghosh was arrested Aug 11 in connection with recovery of skeletons near his house in West Midnapore district in June. Following the recovery, a villager, Shyamal Acharya, filed a police complaint claiming that one of the skeletons was of his father Ajay Acharya.

The FIR filed in the case claimed that on Sep 22, 2002, Acharya and some other members of the Trinamool Congress were attacked by 40 armed people belonging to the CPI-M, including Ghosh.

Of the 58 people charged, only 18 have been arrested so far. The court declared the remaining 40 as absconders and ordered attachment of their properties after issuing arrest warrants against them.
