Navi Mumbai, Nov 2 (IANS) The city administration is planning to reintroduce hovercraft travel between south Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, an official said Wednesday.

City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) of the state government is considering the service to improve connectivity for the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).

‘Commuters can reach the Navi Mumbai airport in a short span of 45 minutes,’ an official said.

The idea was discussed at a meeting when CIDCO identified a plot in Nerul township here to facilitate the Indian Coast Guard to enhance its coastal security operations.

‘During 1994 to 1999, hovercraft services from Vashi and Belapur to Gateway of India (south Mumbai) were operated regularly. But the services could not be continued beyond the Gateway of India due to the lack of permanent hoverport facilities,’ the official added.

Navi Mumbai is some 50 km away from Mumbai.
