New Delhi, Jan 1 (IANS) A total of 724 motorists were ticketed in Delhi for violating traffic norms while five of them had to go behind bars for haphazard driving during the New Year celebrations.

Of these motorists, 67 were challaned (issued tickets) for dangerous driving and 532 prosecuted for drunken driving Tuesday night.
A total 238 car drivers, 265 mobike riders and 12 people plying auto-rickshaws were prosecuted for violating traffic rules.
“At least 91 vehicles were impounded on the spot while five people were arrested for reckless and negligent driving,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla.
“A total of 532 motorists were prosecuted for drunken driving this year against 489 in 2013, 418 in 2012 and 346 in 2011,” said the officer.
According to the officer, only one case of fatal accident was reported while there were five death cases both in 2013 and in 2012 and seven in 2011.
A total of 844 challans were issued last year, while in 2012 the number stood at 624.
