New Delhi, Feb 1 (Inditop.com) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Monday said that it has asked the Manipur government to submit a report on 111 police gunbattles in the state.
An NGO, the Asian Centre for Human Rights, filed a written complaint of human rights violation to the NHRC a day after R.K. Sanjoaba was killed by police Oct 20, 2004.
According to an NHRC official, the commission took up the case immediately and wrote to the Manipur government, seeking a report on the killing, but got no reply.
“The commission had, before this case, written to the Manipur government seeking reports on police encounter cases, but got no reply. Therefore, it has now issued a notice to the chief secretary of Manipur to submit a report on a total of 111 police encounter cases within six weeks time,” an NHRC official told IANS.
The commission has also asked the Manipur government to pay Rs.500,000 as compensation to the kin of Sanjaoba.
The last date for receipt of the report is Feb 25, the NHRC official said.
