Kolkata, July 31 (IANS) One person was killed as the engine and two coaches of the Guwahati-Bangalore Express ran off the tracks near Kaliachak in Malda district of West Bengal and were hit by a passenger train running on the adjoining track Sunday evening, a railway official said.

‘One person is dead. Another four-five casualties are feared,’ said Malda District Magistrate Rajesh Singh.

‘The accident took place in the Malda division between Jamirghata and Gourghata stations,’ said a railway spokesman.

As per preliminary information, two coaches and the engine of the Bangalore-bound Guwahati-Bangalore Express ran off the tracks around 7 p.m., said an official of North East Frontier Railway.

‘Two bogies of the Guwahati-Bangalore Express got derailed. The Azimganj-Malda Town passenger train coming from the opposite direction hit the two coaches,’ said the official.

‘Details are awaited. We have already dispatched a team to the spot,’ he said.

A relief train also left from Howrah.

Inspector General of Police (North Bengal) Ranvir Kumar told IANS that police personnel have also set out for the accident spot. ‘But at this moment nothing is clear,’ he said.
