New Delhi, June 30 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has admitted to pressurising Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh to reverse his stand on many green issues, saying that poverty was a bigger ‘polluter’.
Asked for his reaction on the environment minister’s statement that he has had to reverse many of his positions under pressure from the prime minister, Manmohan Singh, during his media interaction Wednesday, said: ‘I think he is right.’
Ramesh has said that he was facing pressure to overlook environmental violations on several projects.
‘As Gandhiji said, poverty is the biggest polluter. We need to have a balance,’ Manmohan Singh said.
Ramesh, a minister with independent charge, reports to the prime minister.
