Bhopal, Nov 5 (IANS) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan Friday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to seek during his talks with visiting US President Barack Obama the extradition of Warren Anderson, then chairman of Union Carbide when its Bhopal gas plant leak caused thousands of deaths in 1984.
Chauhan in a letter to Manmohan Singh has written that Anderson had always escaped from the clutches of Indian law.
The chief minister said Obama’s tour of India has given ‘us an opportunity to make him aware of the sentiments of people of Madhya Pradesh, especially the gas victims, and to raise the issue of extradition of Anderson’.
‘In these kinds of discussions, the demand for justice should get prime importance,’ he wrote.
Anderson was declared a fugitive by a Bhopal court February 1, 1992, for failing to appear at the court hearings in a culpable homicide case in which he was named the chief defendant.
The US has declined to extradite him citing a lack of evidence.
