Lucknow, Sep 8 (Inditop.com) Marriages may be made in heaven but could be solemnised in a police station as it happened with a love-struck couple in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district, who faced strong opposition from their families.

Lorik (23) and Guddi (21), of Aauratar village in the Maharajganj district, who had eloped Sunday, approached the police at Nichlaul police station for help.

Learning that the couple were adults, the policemen decided to help the couple on humanitarian grounds and conducted their wedding at the station itself Monday evening.

“The police station turned a wedding venue Monday evening, where the young couple was married,” Nichlaul police station chief A.K. Singh told Inditop over telephone.

“We managed to help the couple who were facing strict opposition for their marriage from their family members. The couple had eloped from their home two days ago and Monday approached us for their marriage,” he added.

Lorik and Guddi exchanged garlands and marriage vows in the police station.

“We blessed the young couple and distributed sweets to villagers on their behalf. Later, Lorik and Guddi were taken to a nearby temple where their marriage took place as per the Hindu tradition,” said Singh.

Police later also counselled both families, who ultimately accepted the marriage.

“We explained the legal aspects of the marriage to the couple’s parents, following which they agreed to accept the couple,” said Singh.

Maharajganj is about 300 km from Lucknow.
