New Delhi, July 21 (Inditop.com) President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday condoled the death of well known Hindustani classical singer Gangubai Hangal.
Hangal died in Karnataka’s Hubli town Tuesday morning at the age of 97.
In her condolence message, Patil said: “Gangubai Hangal was one of the most acclaimed exponents of Khyal Gayaki of the Kirana Gharana and a doyen of Hindustani classical music. In her passing away, the nation has lost an accomplished and popular classical vocalist.”
The prime minister in his message termed her an exceptional exponent of Hindustani classical music who displayed extraordinary originality.
“I am deeply grieved to learn of the sad demise of Gangubai Hangal, a celebrated vocalist of our country,” Singh said in an official statement.
“She will always be remembered with respect as much for her musical talent as for the simplicity and nobility of her life. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the members of her bereaved family and countless admirers and listeners of elevating music. I pray for peace of the departed soul,” the prime minister said.
