Sangrur (Punjab), Dec 30 (IANS) An inmate of the Sangrur district jail committed suicide by hanging himself from the grills of the window of his barrack, police said Thursday.
Kamaljit, who killed himself Wednesday night, was accused of killing his father over a property dispute and was arrested Dec 13. He was in his late 30s.
‘We have constitued a special team to look into this case of suicide. Our senior officials have visited the crime spot and they are recording the statements of the jail staff,’ Sangrur district police chief Harcharan Singh Bhullar told IANS.
Kamaljit, who was a drug addict, was alleged to have killed his father Harbhajan Singh, 65, a resident of Bardwal village near Dhuri town in Sangrur district. He had strangulated his father to death Nov 23 and buried his body in the courtyard of his house here.
‘Kamaljit was angry with his father as he had made the will of his entire property in the name of his grandson (son of Kamaljit). To misguide the police, he lodged a missing complaint of his father on Dec 12 but he broke down during the interrogation,’ said a police official.
Sangrur town is around 120 km from the state capital Chandigarh.
