Mumbai, Dec 31 (IANS) Supreme Court lawyer rani Jethmalani, daughter of former union law minister Ram Jethmalani, passed away here Saturday, family sources said. She was in her 50s.

Rani was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital Dec 9 due to multi-organ complications. Her funeral took place later in the day.

Family sources said she was discharged from the hospital and breathed her last at her residence in south Mumbai.

Rani, also a social activist, constantly worked to eliminate discrimination against women. Through her NGO Women’s Action Research and Legal Action for Women (WARLAW), she led a group of attorneys who provided free legal assistance to dowry victims.

She worked towards enabling women in India make laws effective and promoted the concept of human rights. She spread awareness about the rights of women in remote areas.

After her liver transplant in 1998, she worked to increase awareness about liver disease and transplants. She penned the book ‘Kali’s Yug’ and co-authored ‘Dowry Deaths and Access to Justice’ with P.K. Dey.

According to those close to her, she liked to keep to herself apart from her court cases.
