New Delhi, Dec 22 (Inditop.com) A British-made robotic vehicle has been inducted in the Indian Army and will be used in the terror-hit Jammu and Kashmir to defuse improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by militants, a defence official said Tuesday.
The state-of-the-art equipment called Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) will help in preventing casualties of the armed forces, the official told reporters.
“To avoid casualties, the army in Jammu and Kashmir has added this latest state-of-the-art technology in its anti-insurgency operations,” the official told Inditop.
The robotic vehicle detects and defuses the IEDs and has been delivered to 115 Engineers, he said.
The radio-controlled device has tank-like chains and is said to be more effective as compared to other anti-mine equipments.
It can be controlled up to a distance of one km, the official said.
The vehicle, which has three cameras, is connected to a liquid crystal display (LCD) and can lift explosives up to 150 kg.
“Test trials have been conducted and we had good results,” the official said, adding that the device has given an edge to anti-guerrilla operations in Jammu and Kashmir, where militants use IEDs and land mines as a safe weapon to target security forces.
