New Delhi, April 30 (Inditop.com) Supreme Court Justice Sarosh Homi Kapadia was Friday appointed the new chief justice of India by President Pratibha Patil. Kapadia will assume charge May 12.
Justice Kapadia takes over from Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, India’s first Dalit chief justice.
A statement from the law and justice ministry said: “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the president is pleased to appoint Justice Sarosh Homi Kapadia, judge of the Supreme Court, to be the chief justice of India with effect from May 12, 2010.”
Kapadia was born Sep 29, 1947. He enrolled as an advocate Sep 10, 1974, and practiced at the Bombay High Court.
Kapadia was appointed additional judge of the Bombay High Court Oct 8, 1991. He was elevated as a permanent judge of the high court March 23, 1993. He was appointed as a judge of the Special Court (Trial of Offences Relating to Transaction in Securities) Act, 1992, on Oct 15, 1999.
Kapadia was appointed the chief justice of the Uttarakhand High Court Aug 5, 2003, and elevated to the bench of the Supreme Court Dec 18, 2003.
He has keen interest in economics, public finance, theoretical physics, and Hindu and Buddhist philosophies.
According to the Supreme Court website, he is “due to retire Sep 29, 2012.”
