Shimla, Feb 9 (Inditop.com) Snowfall continued to elude this Himachal Pradesh capital Tuesday, though higher slopes of the Himalayas had moderate to heavy snow. The weatherman said the snow may fall till the night here.

There has been no snowfall in Shimla for 26 days now. The season’s only snowfall here so far, a mild one, was on Jan 13. However, tourist spots Kufri near here and Narkanda, 65 km from Shimla, have experienced moderate snow.

“Shimla is yet to experience any fresh spell of snow. But the city saw more than 49 mm of rain during the past 24 hours,” Manmohan Singh, director of the meteorological office here, told Inditop.

“Now (after the rain), the temperature has come down massively. There are chances of snowfall anytime either this (Tuesday) evening or in the night,” he said.

Shimla recorded a low of 3.6 degrees Celsius, a fall of 1.1 degrees from Monday.

Lower areas of the state, including Bhuntar (71.8 mm) and Dharamsala (78.6 mm), have been receiving moderate to heavy rainfall since Monday morning.

According to the meteorological office, the high hills in Lahaul and Spiti, Kullu, Chamba and Kinnaur districts have been experiencing moderate to heavy snowfall.

Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti saw 33 cm of snow, whereas it was 52.5 cm at Kalpa in Kinnaur district in the past 24 hours.

The picturesque tourist resort of Manali, around 300 km from Shimla, has had snowfall since Sunday night. The town has been cut off from the rest of the country since Monday due to massive landslides on the roads leading to it.

“So far, Manali has received more than three feet of snow and it’s still snowing there,” Singh said.

He said western disturbances in the region would remain active till Feb 12, resulting in more snowfall and rain.
