Srinagar, Jan 29 (Inditop.com) The Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed Friday morning following fresh snowfall and slippery road conditions in the Jawahar tunnel area, a Jammu and Kashmir traffic department official said.
“The highway has been closed for traffic today (Friday) following fresh snowfall in Jawahar tunnel area and slippery road conditions,” the official said.
Snowfall in the mountains and rain in the plains continued as the authorities commenced road clearance operations in hilly areas.
A Met department official said: “Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam and other hilly areas received fresh snowfall today (Friday). The minimum temperature in Srinagar was four degrees Celsius. It was minus 10.6 degrees in Leh and minus 5.6 degrees in Kargil towns of the Ladakh region.
“Rain and snow is expected during the next 24 hours across the valley,” he said.
Snow also blocked the Tangmarg-Gulmarg road in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district and snow cutting machines have been deployed to clear the road to the Gulmarg tourist resort.
The Kashmir Valley has received scant snow and rain during January so far and the fresh snowfall has come as a major relief. It would replenish the water reservoirs of the valley that sustain a steady water flow in the rivers during the summer months.
