Manali, June 30 (IANS) Hundreds of people, mainly tourists, have been rescued from near the Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district, where they were stranded by landslides blocking the highway, an official said here.
‘All the stranded people were rescued Thursday afternoon after the road connectivity between the Rohtang Pass and Manali was restored. They have left for their destinations,’ Sub-Divisional Magistrate Balbir Thakur told IANS.
He said the traffic was restored but the movement of vehicles was at a snail’s pace due to accumulation of slush on the highway. The landslides were caused by heavy rains in the area.
‘It’s still not advisable for the motorists to travel towards the Rohtang Pass from Manali,’ he added.
The 13,051-foot high Rohtang Pass – which remains blocked with heavy snowfall during winter – is on the Manali-Leh highway. It attracts thousands of tourists for adventure-related activities.
