Jaipur, Feb 28 (IANS) A court here Tuesday extended by a day the judicial custody of suspended Indian Police Service (IPS) officer A.K. Jain, arrested for his alleged role in the killing of criminal Dara Singh in an allegedly staged shoot-out.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought the police remand of Jain, who had surrendered in court Monday. This was objected to by Jain’s lawyers.
“The court has reserved the decision for the police remand for Wednesday. His judicial custody was extended till Wednesday,” said CBI counsel Sarfaraz Haider Khan.
Jain was brought to the special CBI court amidst high security from the Jaipur Central Jail Tuesday afternoon.
Khan urged the court to grant the agency 14-day police remand of 1978-betch Indian Police Service officer. He pleaded that the police remand was necessary to probe the conspiracy aspect of the fake gunfight.
Jain had surrendered Monday after evading arrest in the case for nine months. The special CBI court here remanded Jain, who was additional director general of police for home guards before his disappearance in May last year, to one-day’s judicial custody.
Jain is a proclaimed offender in the case in which Dara Singh was gunned down by a team of state police’s Special Operations Group (SOG) on the outskirts of Jaipur Oct 23, 2006. The CBI had announced a cash reward of Rs.10 lakh on his head.
The CBI had earlier seized Jain’s properties on a court’s order. An arrest warrant had also been issued against Jain July 8. Later, he was declared a proclaimed offender.
Jain is among the two IPS officers who are accused in the case. While Inspector General of Police A. Ponnuchami has been arrested, Jain had gone missing.
Apart from Ponnuchami, the CBI arrested nine other policemen – Inspectors Nisar Khan, Naresh Sharma and Subhash Godara, sub-inspectors Satyanarayan Godara and Munshi Lal, assistant sub-inspector Surendra Singh, constables Jagraj and Bardi Prasad and driver Sardar Singh – in the case.
Three other policemen – Rajesh Chaudhary, Zulfikar and Arvind – are still on the run.
