Sonepat (Haryana), June 27 (IANS) Two teenaged cousins were murdered and their bodies thrown into a canal here allegedly by their grandmother and two uncles, who suspected them of having an affair. All the three have been arrested, police said Sunday.

The deceased — Chanchal Kumari, 14, and her 13-year-old cousin Raj Kumari, residents of Mohala Kot locality — were murdered by their grandmother, Vidya Devi, and two uncles, police said.

‘The accused took the girls in a car on the pretext of visiting a temple Saturday morning. Mid-way, they strangulated them to death and later threw their bodies in a canal,’ district police chief Rajinder Singh said, adding that they were arrested later that day.

‘The accused have confessed to their crime. They said that they had caught the girls in a compromising position with their 16-year-old cousin Vijay Kumar, who is absconding,’ Singh added.

Haryana is infamous for notorious honour killings involving young boys and girls.

A few days ago, a teenaged couple was murdered in a village in Bhiwani district by the girl’s family as the boy and girl, who were from a different gotra (sub-caste), were planning to marry.

In March, a court in Karnal had awarded the death sentence to five people for the honour killing of a young couple who had married in 2007 against the wishes of their community.
