Agartala, Oct 23 (IANS) The Tripura government Wednesday announced a donation of Rs.1 crore towards the relief of flood and cyclone victims in Odisha, a government official said here Wednesday.

“The Tripura council of ministers chaired by Chief Minister Manik Sarkar in a meeting here Tuesday decided to contribute the money (Rs.1 crore) to the Odisha Chief Minister’s Relief Fund soon,” the official said.
“The Tripura government considers that this is its moral duty to stand behind the people of Odisha,” the official said quoting the resolution of the state cabinet.
The tropical cyclone Phailin in the Bay of Bengal, which made landfall Oct 12 night near Gopalpur in Odisha’s Ganjam district, killed at least 44 and left behind a trail of destruction in several districts of the coastal state, bringing heavy rain and causing floods.
According to the Odisha government, around 1.2 crore people in 17 districts of the state have been affected by the calamity.
The state government estimated the damage from the cyclone and subsequent floods at about Rs.4,242 crore, and requested the central government to provide financial assistance.
