Kolkata, Aug 9 (IANS) An elephant was killed after being hit by a train in Chapramari wildlife sanctuary near Dooars in north West Bengal Monday, an official said.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (wildlife and bio-diversity) S.B. Mondal said: ‘A 15-year old male tusker was hit by a train on the elevated portion of the railway track that passes through the sanctuary in Jalpaiguri district.

‘The elephant tumbled down and succumbed to its injuries,’ he said.

An injury mark was found on the animal’s right hind leg, which revealed that the elephant was first hit by the train, Mondal said.
