Kolkata, Jan 1 (IANS) The fire department was kept on its toes on the first day of 2012 as two blazes broke out in different parts of Kolkata Sunday. No casualties were reported.
Tense scenes were witnessed at the bustling Park Street area after a blaze broke out in Apeejay House — a commercial building.
Smoke was seen billowing out of the seventh floor of the building around 11.50 a.m. Six fire tenders reached the spot around 12.20 p.m. Four more tenders were later pressed into service.
‘There was no loss of life or any injury. The fire is completely under control. The reason behind the fire is not yet known. Fire officials are investigating the cause behind the fire,’ said West Bengal Disaster Management Minister Javed Ahmed Khan.
Sources said the fire was first noticed by the building’s guards who immediately switched off the electricity supply and informed the fire brigade.
The building is close to Stephen Court, where 43 people were killed in a fire in 2010.
The second fire broke out in a garment shop in APC Bose Road area around 1.50 p.m.
Fire tenders later doused the flame. ‘The fire is totally under control. It seems that the reason behind the fire is short circuit. There is no casualty or injury,’ a fire officer told IANS.
