Kolkata, Feb 1 (IANS) Two Indian Administrative Service officers – one retired and another on compulsory waiting – in West Bengal were arrested for their alleged involvement in an iron ore export scam in 2004-05.
Debaditya Chakraborty, the then managing director of the essential commodities services department, and R.N. Jamir, the then director general of the department, were arrested by the state police’s CID department.
“We have arrested two IAS officers – Debaditya Chakraborty and R.N. Jamir have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the Rs.125 crore iron ore export scam,” DIG (Special Operation Group), CID K. Jayaraman said.
Jayaraman said that during that period, the essential commodities services department were assigned to send iron ore to a Chinese company and sent it through an Indian company, Bharat Minmate Corporation Ltd.
The consignment was rejected because the quality of the ore was inferior but the ship didn’t return and it is anticipated that the ore was sold somewhere between India and China.
The CID officer said that in 2007, the detective department of Kolkata Police arrested Pratap Bansal and Aman Biswal of Bharat Minmate Corporation and mentioned the alleged involvement of two government officials in the charge sheet.
