Raipur, Jan 2 (IANS) Police in Chhattisgarh have arrested two men for killing a girl to appease their god for a better harvest, an officer said Monday.
The arrest was made last week from a forested area of illiteracy-hit Bijapur district, some 450 km south of Raipur.
‘Two poor people have been arrested on charges of sacrificing a seven-year-old girl, Lalita Tati,’ Superintendent of Police R.N. Das told newsmen.
He added that the accused had abducted the girl in October when she was returning home after watching television at her heighbour’s house.
Das said that initial investigation reveal that the accused, who are farmers, killed the girl and removed her liver to offer it to their god to ensure a better harvest.
Human sacrifices and killing of poor people, mainly women in the name of witchcraft, in forested tribal hamlets in the state are not new to Chhattisgarh despite government regularly conducting peoples’ awareness drives to educate the people about such social evils.
