New Delhi, Jan 19 (Inditop.com) Over 1,000 people have been killed by wild elephants in various parts of India in the last three years, an official spokesperson said here Tuesday, adding that tigers killed 11 people and lions three during the same period.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Environment and Forests said wild elephants had also damaged 15,312 houses in the last three years; 87,269 cases of crop damage by the pachyderms had been reported.

The authorities have paid about Rs.30.29 crore (Rs.302.9 million/$6.6 million) in compensation to the affected people, the spokesperson added.
