New Delhi, June 1 (IANS) A woman , who abandoned her 17-month-old daughter at her in-laws’ house, agreed to take care of the child after the Delhi High Court’s intervention.

Appearing before a division bench of Justice A.K.Sikri and Justice Ajit Bharihoke, Rajinder Kaur agreed to take back Gudia. The court also directed Gudia’s father Preetam Singh to pay a monthly maintenance of Rs.3,000 to Rajinder for the child’s upkeep.

The court was hearing the petition filed by Gudia’s grandfather Baldev Singh, in whose house Rajinder Kaur left the baby May 4.

Rajinder had married Preetam Singh in February 2008. However, differences soon cropped up between the couple and she returned to her parents’ house barely a month after the marriage.

Rajinder gave birth to Gudia in December 2008. Gudia had never seen her father or her paternal grandparents before Rajinder went to her in-laws’ house with some female relatives and Gudia and left the child there. Gudia cried all night for her mother and was not at all at ease with her grandparents.

In his petition, Baldev Singh alleged that police made no effort to trace his daughter-in-law. He also sought action against those responsible for abandoning the baby at his house.
