Chandigarh, Oct 11 (Inditop.com) The Chandigarh administration’s initiative to take library books and magazines to the doorsteps of senior citizens and disabled has received an enthusiastic response, an official said Sunday.
“The scheme was launched keeping in mind the needs of senior citizens and disabled who are fond of reading but cannot make it to the libraries. It has met with enthusiastic response,” state librarian Suraj P. Nagpal said here.
“Our staff is receiving four to five calls every day from senior citizens and disabled. The NSS (National Social Service) volunteers keep delivering and collecting books or magazines from their houses,” he said.
The scheme was launched Sep 8, the World Literacy Day.
Books are delivered thrice a week — Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
The senior citizens are upbeat.
“This scheme is very good. They should streamline it. We should be supplied a catalogue of books and magazines to give us more choice,” said 80-year-old R.S. Duggal.
Added C.B. Gupta: “The scheme is very beneficial but we need some changes at the delivery and collection levels to make it more streamlined.”
