New Delhi, Jan 3 (IANS) M.S. Dhir of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was Friday elected speaker of the Delhi assembly, defeating BJP’s Jagdish Mukhi.
Dhir won with the backing of his own party, the Congress, the Janata Dal-United and an independent in the 70-member house.
Mukhi got the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Akali Dal.
Dhir’s election came a day after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal proved his majority in the assembly.
A legislator from Jangpura, Dhir defeated Tarvinder Singh Marwah of the Congress by 1,744 votes in the Delhi election.
