Chandigarh, Jan 25 (IANS) With just five days to go for the Jan 30 Punjab assembly polls, a number of senior national leaders descended across the state Wednesday to address rallies in support of their party candidates.
Former deputy prime minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani addressed a rally in Dinanagar town in support of the BJP candidates of the area.
Calling the UPA government “dishonest”, Advani slammed the Congress party for “taking the country for a ride and encouraging corruption in all spheres”.
Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi addressed three rallies in Tarn Taran, Ferozepur and Jalandhar in support of Congress candidates.
Rahul blamed the Akali Dal-BJP government in Punjab for not utilizing the funds provided by the central government through various projects and schemes.
Former BJP president Rajnath Singh addressed rallies in Ferozepur, Sujanpur and Amritsar.
He condemned the Punjab Congress leaders, particularly state Congress president Amarinder Singh, for trying to instigate party workers by encouraging them to resort to violence.
Bollywood actress and BJP leader Hema Malini addressed rallies in support of BJP and Akali Dal candidates in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Dasuya.
Senior BJP leader and leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, who was scheduled to address rallies in Punjab Wednesday, could not come as she is suffering from viral fever.
BJP’s women wing national president Smriti Irani and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal will address rallies in Punjab Thursday while actor and BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha will arrive Friday, Punjab BJP media in-charge Vineet Joshi told IANS.
