New Delhi, Jan 21 (Inditop.com) Veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Jyoti Basu’s place in the party’s politburo and the central committee will remain unfilled, senior party leaders said Thursday.

Basu was elected to the party’s 87-member central committee at the 19th party Congress held in Coimbatore in April 2008. He was also the special invitee to the 14-member politburo.

“Jyoti Basu’s place cannot be filled,” a senior party leader told Inditop.

Another CPI-M leader said: “Basu was not a member of the politburo. He was an invitee. We don’t call it vacancy.”

The first meeting of the party central committee, after the demise of Basu, will be held in Kolkata Feb 4-6, said the CPI-M leader. One seat in the committee remains vacant.

Basu died Jan 17 in a Kolkata hospital after battling multiple illnesses.
