Kolkata, Sep 12 (IANS) Lashing out at the BJP for stalling the proceedings of parliament, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal Wednesday accused it of “destroying” the thesis of democracy for securing its own future in the 2014 general elections.

“Lots of bills are still pending in parliament. But they couldn’t be discussed because the opposition is stalling the proceedings of parliament. They are not allowing any debate on the floor of the house,” said Sibal while addressing a programme of the Indian Chamber of Commerce here.
The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in a recent report said that private players had windfall gains worth Rs.1.86 lakh crore in the 142 coal blocks allocated by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been demanding Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s resignation over the CAG report that spoke of presumptive loss of $37 billion in coal blocks allocations, when he also held the charge of the coal ministry.
The entire monsoon session of parliament was stalled by frequent disruptions of the BJP after it demanded the resignation of the prime minister, which the Congress-led UPA refused to concede.
“They are trying to destroy the basic thesis of democracy only to serve its own vested interests of returning to power after 2014 general elections. But I want to say that the interests of the country, interests of India is much bigger than that of any particular party’s political ambitions,” he said.
Sibal accused the BJP of violating the basic rules of democracy by denying the majority of the UPA in parliament.
“By stalling the parliament, they are stalling the passage of the important legislations, which in turn is hurting the growth story of India,” he said.
