Kolkata, Dec 4 (IANS) Enthused by the massive victory of the Trinamool Congress in the South Kolkata Lok Sabha bypoll against its arch-rival CPI-M, party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Sunday said the verdict will inspire the government to work more for the state’s development.
‘I am grateful to those people who voted for us. I think that they gave us the inspiration to work more for the development of Bengal,’ Banerjee told reporters here after State Trinamool Congress president Subrata Bakshi trounced Communist Party of India-Marxist’s (CPI-M) Ritabrata Banerjee with a margin of over 2.30 lakh votes.
‘We have to work for the poor, for the common people who are the base of democracy. And we will strongly deal with any attempt to hinder the development projects. This verdict of the people of South Kolkata will inspire me,’ she added.
The bypoll, held Nov 30, was necessitated by Banerjee’s resignation from the Lok Sabha after she won the assembly byelection from Bhawanipur two months back.
The chief minister charged the CPI-M with making ‘false statements’ against her party.
‘Why the CPI-M is so restless? I had told them to remain quiet in the next 10 years. They should watch what the new government does in these years. This regime will do better and better in the days ahead,’ she said.
‘The CPI-M will lose its strength day by day due to its faulty works,’ she added.
