Patna, April 16 (Inditop) A candidate of the state’s ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U) Prabhunath Singh and Congress nominee Tarkeshwar Singh were detained Thursday after they were found “intimidating” voters in Bihar’s Maharajgang constituency, police said.
Voting was held Thursday in 13 of Bihar’s 40 Lok Sabha constituencies, including Maharajganj, for the first phase of the general elections.
Prabhunath Singh, a murder accused, “was detained from his residence”, a district police official said.
The police said he was roaming around polling stations along with his supporters and musclemen in the morning. The police said they had received complaints that the JD-U candidate harassed voters in the constituency.
Prabhunath Singh, the main accused in a double murder case, has around two dozen more criminal cases pending against him. He is considered close to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and JD-U national president Sharad Yadav.
Earlier, the police detained Tarkeshwar Singh on a similar charge. He was taken to a police station. “Tarkeshwar Singh was detained on charges of intimidating the voters during the polling,” a police official said.
Tarkeshwar Singh, also a known criminal-turned-politician, is facing a number of criminal charges and is out on bail.
